Glass is the most important part of any conservatory. It affects how it looks and how comfortable you will be inside it.
Not all glass is the same so when you are buying a conservatory, make sure you know what double glazed units you will be getting.
The very best quality double glazed units can cost around three or four times as much as some of the cheaper budget double glazed units.

The air gap in a double glazed unit provides the insulation. Most standard double glazed units have an air gap of 12mm to 16mm between two 6mm panes of glass.
You can get better insulation from glazed units that have a wider air gap filled with a gas like Argon. This quality of glazing is not as cheap but might save you a lot of money on heating costs if you are planning to use your conservatory all year round.
Low-E glass has a special metal-based coating on the inside face of the inside pane, designed to reflect heat back into the room. It is said to be at least 30% better than ordinary glazing.
Glass coated on the outside, helps reflect some of the heat from the sun. This can help keep your conservatory cooler in the summer and prevent furniture and fabrics from fading too quickly.
Self cleaning glass has a special coating which helps to remove dirt and prevent the streaky appearance that often occurs after it rains.
In places where there is a risk of glass being shattered, such as roofs and lower walls, safety glass should be used. Building regulations make this compulsory, but only if they apply, and most conservatories fall outside the need to comply with Building Regulations.
Toughened or tempered glass is cheaper than laminated glass, which is thicker and much more difficult to break even when struck with reasonable impact.
Decorative glass is also available and it is even relatively easy to have patterns etched on the glass to give it a unique personalised appearance.
